How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
Loose 3/4" gravel or traffic bond runs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Topsoil is about 1.05, sand 1.3, asphalt millings 1.35, and wood mulch only about 0.35 tons per yard. Moisture changes weight roughly +/-10%.
How many yards fit in a dump truck?
Our quad-axle dump truck hauls roughly 16 tons per load — about 10-11 yards of gravel. The mini dump carries 4-5 tons and gets into tight residential driveways.
How deep should driveway gravel be?
A new gravel driveway typically needs a 4-6 inch compacted base of traffic bond, topped with 2-3 inches of finish gravel. For a top-dressing refresh, 2 inches is usually enough.
